How to Market and Ask for Planned Gifts

Speaker: Dennis Kempf, Director of Philanthropy – National St. Vincent de Paul Society

About the presentation: The big take-away from this presentation will be this: always find a way to ask for planned gifts—directly or indirectly. Keep it simple. Know where the “real wealth” is in America and the vehicles available for securing gifts. This is NOT a technical presentation on planned giving vehicles, instead focuses on the soft side of advancing future gifts. How do we motivate donors to consider naming our institutions in their estate plans? When and why do people write and update their Wills and Trusts? Who are our best planned gift prospects, and how do we market to them?

How do we “make the ask” for what could be transformational gifts? And what are some pitfalls and practicalities of donor recognition? This session will end with Q&As.

Speaker bio: Dennis Kempf has been in the Planned Giving world for the past 25 years. He currently serves as the Director of Philanthropy for the National Council of the United States Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which is headquartered are in St. Louis.

His undergraduate degree is in philosophy, and he has a Masters in Non-Profit Management from Washington University. In his role, Dennis focuses on “helping donors do the good they want to do.”

Both of his daughters will be graduating in May – the older from grad school at SLU, and the younger from DePauw University.
